Comments: The Floortime Bible! It may seem daunting, but you don't have to read it all at once to get started.

Engaging Autism: Helping Children Relate, Communicate and Think with the DIR Floortime Approach (Hardcover) by Stanley Greenspan.
Comments: This is Grenspan's newest book that describes the DIR approach.  It's getting very good reviews among moms.

Building Healthy Minds: The Six Experiences That Create Intelligence and Emotional Growth in Babies and Young Children

First Feelings: Milestones in the Emotional Development of Your Baby and Child, by Stanley Greenpan, MD and Nancy Thorne Greenspan.

Touchpoints: Both Volumes of the Nation's Jost Trusted Guide to the First Six Years of Life (Paperback) by T. Berry Brazelton.
Comments: Ruby Salazar, DIR Faculty member and Social Worker, recommends parents read sections of this at the same point at which their child is developmentally so you can handle issues appropiately I.e.: discipline, sleep, etc.

Child Development: A Practitioner's Guide by Douglas Davies.
Comments:  This is a good book on child development.  Some technical terms, but readable by all.

Me, Myself, and I: How Children Build Their Sense of Self by Kyle D Pruett.
Comments: This book is wonderful for understanding how children develop, from 18-36 months.  Gives practical guidance for how parents can positively influence this critical period. 

On Intelligence by Jeff Hawkins, Sandra Blakeslee .
Comments: Jeff Hawkins invented the Palm Pilot and is a founder of Handspring. This was recommended by OT, Rosemary White, at ICDL conf. Fall 2005, as a way for parents to understand the way their child learns. It is is a fascinating and quick read.

It Takes Two To Talk: A Pratical Guide For Parents of Children With Language Delays
(Paperback) by Jan Pepper, Elaine Weitzman

The Affect-Based Language Curriculum (ABLC) By Diane Lewis
Comments: Diane Lewis is a DIr Faculty member. She frequently lectures at the ICDL conferences. Her ABLC program is a very intensive program designed to help children who have very challenging speech issues. However, many parents buy the book because they find the excercises so useful and well written though they choose not to follow the program. This can be a great resource when you are starting to learn floortime because the excercises are so easy to follow.

From Disablity to Possibility: The Power of Inclusive Classrooms (Paperback) by Patrick Schwarz
Comments: Quick read, excellent ideas. Good resource to forward to school teachers, administrators, etc.

You're Going to Love this Kid!  Teaching Children with Autism in the Inclusive Classroom (Paperback) by Paula Kluth
Comments: Good resource for parents that would like more information on inclusion.

Books on Sensory Integration and Sensory Issues
The Out-of-Sync Child: Recognizing and Coping with Sensory Integration Dysfunction (Paperback) by Carol Stock Kranowitz, Larry B. Silver
Comments:  Great for the layman.  Explains sensory experiences and how some children have trouble integrating the sensory information.  Includes checklists for parents to identifiy their child's profile.

The Out-of-Sync Child Has Fun (Paperback) by Carol Stock Kranowitz, T.J. Wylie
Comments: The conpanion book to TOSC.  Includes pratical activies to build a sensory diet for each sensory profile.

Sensory Integration and the Child: Understanding Hidden Sensory Challenges, by A. Jean Ayres.
Comments: Great in-depth overview of sensory integration.  Includes tips for parents in jost sections.

Sensational Kids: Hope and Help for Children with Sensory Processing Disorder, by Lucy Jane Miller, Doris A. Fuller (Contributor)

Comments:
Lucy Jane Miller is the considered to be the world's leading expert on Sensory Processing Disorder. She spoke at a recent ICDL conference and was fantastic! The book is filled with examples of children and research that is easy to digest. You will understand so much more if you read this. HIGHLY recommended!

The Explosive Child : A New Approach for Understanding and Parenting Easily Frustrated, Chronically Inflexible Children
(Paperback) by Ross W. Greene

How to Talk so Kids Will LIsten and Listen so Kids Will Talk, by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish. 
Comments: Gives effective strategies to work with children of all ages in areas of discipline, coping with negative feelings, gaining cooperation, and resolving conflicts peacefully.

Raising a Thinking Child: How to Help Your Young Chid Resolve Everyday Comflicts and Get Along with Others, by Myrna Shure.

Raising a Thinking Child Workbook: Teaching Young Children How to Resolve Everyday Conflicts and Get Along with Others, by Myrna Shure and Theresa Foy Degeronimo.
Comments:  These two books are great for breaking down the learning process into manageable steps you can teach your chid.  The workbook contains tons of fun games and exercies to practice what the book lays out.

Books on Biomedical Intervention
Children With Starving Brains: A Medical Treatment Guide for Autism Spectrum Disorder by Jaquelyn McCandless.
Comments: If you are considering looking into biomedical intervevtion, this a great book to start with.  It gives a full explanation of the biomedical theories and treatments.

Biologoical Treatments for Autism and PDD, by William Shaw, PhD. 
Comments:  Provides good explanations for how to interpret results of some of the common tests DAN! doctors prescribe, as well as some history on how thse tests were developed.  Biological descussion of typical medical issues is included.

What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Children's Vaccinations, by Stephanie Cave. 
Comments: Gives a full discussion of vaccination pluses and minuses and makes recommendations for reducing the risks.
